Registration of Death<\/strong><\/p>\n

The first step to take following a loved one\u2019s passing is to obtain their certification of death. This is necessary in order to register their death with the authorities and gain the paperwork needed to begin funeral arrangements.<\/p>\n

You will need to get a medical certificate from a doctor \u2013 if the death occurred in a hospital, then this will be provided to you, whereas if it occurred at home or elsewhere, you will need to contact your doctor for certification. For sudden or unexpected deaths, a coronary inspection may be required; in such an event, you should dial 111 immediately for advice.<\/p>\n

When you have obtained a medical certificate with a doctor\u2019s verification, you will need to take it to your local registry office. You will also need to take with you some details of the deceased, including their ID, proof of address, birth certificate, medical card, marriage certificate and national insurance number where necessary. If you have all of the correct documentation, then the process should take around thirty minutes. You will then be issued with a death certificate so that you can proceed to make funeral arrangements.<\/p>\n

Funeral Arrangements<\/strong><\/p>\n

In some cases, detailed funeral instructions will have been left by the deceased, or they may have even arranged a prepaid funeral, in which event the ceremony should be carried out as per their request. If this is not the case, then it can be a little more difficult and you will need to organise the ceremony as you see fit.<\/p>\n

Executing the Will<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the last key things you will need to consider following a death is the execution of the will. In some cases, a solicitor will have been appointed to carry out this task, in which case you will need to inform them of the death. If this is not the case, then you will need to have a full tax assessment of their assets carried out for inheritance tax purposes, before dividing them according to any legal boundaries.<\/p>\n
